New information has been revealed on the upcoming Star Trek series following the continuing adventures of Jean-Luc Picard. In an interview with The Graham Norton Show, Sir Patrick Stewart revealed when the series will be set in the Star Trek universe. While past press releases have stated that the series would take place 20-25 years after Star Trek: The Next Generation, Stewart says that the series will take place exactly 19 years after the events of The Next Generation finale. The finale of The Next Generation, which was entitled “All Good Things,” took place in the year 2370, meaning the new series will begin in the year 2389.
Although Picard has been away from Star Fleet for several years, many things have happened in the Star Trek universe since his departure. One of the biggest things of course being the destruction of Romulus, which was destroyed by a supernova in 2387. Alex Kurtzman, who is serving as an executive producer on the currently untitled series, says that the destruction of Romulus will have a major impact on Picard. Speaking at the TCA Winter 2019 Press Tour, Kurtzman also told reporters of the tone of the show. Kurtzman says that, like The Next Generation, the Picard series will follow a realistic and grounded approach to the future. Kurtzman further explains that Star Trek is at its best when it is at its most realistic, which is why The Next Generation is so beloved by fans of the franchise.
As fans eagerly await the show’s premiere, other actors from The Next Generation have also expressed interest in reprising their characters once again. In an interview with David Tennant on his podcast, David Tennant Does a Podcast With…, Whoopi Goldberg said that she would love to appear in the new series. Goldberg played Guinan on The Next Generation, Picard’s friend and the host of the USS Enterprise’s Ten Forward lounge. Despite wanting to return to the franchise, Goldberg says that she has yet to be approached by anyone connected to the series.
