Recent news has come to light that WWE talent Roman Reigns was seen to be visibly distraught backstage after the events of an unplanned spot between himself and Kevin Owens. Those within earshot of Reigns can confirm that he believed one of his eardrums had been ruptured and, alluding to the fact that it was an unplanned trigger, was understandably irate about the situation.

Despite what was planned to occur, Reigns did not participate in the press conference that followed the “Survivor Series” event. Other performers familiar with the scene expressed disbelief that there would be any extended rivalry between Owens and Reigns; most believed that the severity of Reigns’ reaction to the injury was fleeting, arising from the heat of the moment.

It remains unclear what sort of situation was the trigger for Reigns’ displeasure. The only moments where Owens and Reigns collaborated during the actual Survivor Series event were close to its end. Owens delivered a slap to Reigns’ face and then the two men engaged in a period of trading blow for blow. Romans landed a Superman punch against Owens and Owens went into a combination of a superkick, into a pop-up powerbomb and finishing with a stunner. Sami Zayn then intervened during Owens’ pin, contributing to the climax of the match where Zayn delivered a low blow and a “Helluva Kick,” Zayn’s signature move, against Owens.

When an eardrum becomes ruptured or perforated, tearing arises within the tissue that separates the ear canal from the middle ear. This sort of problem can lead to hearing loss and even leave the middle ear susceptible to infection. While it is possible for a ruptured eardrum to recover from such trauma after a few weeks, especially traumatic examples may require surgical intervention or a patch to mend. The main causes of a ruptured eardrum would be an infection within the middle ear, rapid changes in pressure while traveling between levels of high altitude, trauma from close proximity to loud noises, puncturing from the insertion of a foreign object or, the most likely case with Reigns, some intense head trauma.
