Marc Spector received bad news about himself and his superhero counterpart Moon Knight. When the character awoke on his recent Disney+ streaming series, he found himself in a psychiatric ward. The doctors told him there’s no such hero as Moon Knight, and Spector imagined everything.

Becoming Moon Knight

Marvel shocked many people, even longtime comic book fans, with the news it would be producing a Moon Knight streaming series. The venerable character was one of the top-selling direct sales books in the early 1980s, but like so many B and C-grade characters, Marc Spector/Moon Knight flailed around. So, writers took turns coming up with new spins and kept trying with the character. They even gave him additional alter egos to tweak the stories. So, enter millionaire Steve Grant and cab driver Jake Lockley.

The writers even added Khonshu, the ancient Egyptian God, to the mix. Did Khonshu exist, or was Moon Knight and his alter egos imagining everything? That’s the new spin on the comic book and live-action version for the character.

Keeping Audiences Guessing

Audiences continue to return to Marvel Studios’ output. The television and streaming series and the theatrical films deliver on expectations. People want to see over-the-top action heroes defeat comic book villains. Fans appreciate the formula, but they don’t want to see the same thing all the time. With so many projects produced and in development, Marvel knows it must change things up a bit to make the productions fresh. So, it turned to Jeff Lemire’s source material for its live-action Moon Knight mini-series.

If audiences aren’t sure about whether Moon Knight is real, the character becomes more engaging and intriguing. A sense of mystery follows the story since audiences may also think that the “bad guys” are trying to convince Spector/Moon Knight he’s suffering from psychological issues.

Moon Knight tries to be a different series. That could give the character a following that might translate into more appearances.
