You’re on a date with an attractive lady, and you are about to kiss her. After your lips meet, she cringes and moves away quickly. Things seemed to be going smoothly. You both were into each other, so what could be the problem? You have a funny taste in your mouth, so you assume it’s your breath. In the future, you don’t want this to ever happen again. Thanks to Cameron Clokie, a noted oral surgeon, you can learn some dental tips that will keep your breath fresh, even when you’re on the go or traveling.

Reasons Behind Bad Breath

The CEO of Induce Biologics, Dr. Cameron Clokie, feels that it’s important to understand the most common reasons behind bad breath. When you learn the causes, you can do your best to prevent them so that your mouth remains fresh and kissable for your next date.

  • Dry Mouth. When your saliva production is compromised, your mouth isn’t being cleaned properly. Bad breath often results, which means that a dry mouth is sure to make your date plans dry up.
  • Bacteria. Millions of bacteria line your mouth. When it’s allowed to feed on the leftovers in your mouth, a foul smell is left behind.
  • Gum Disease. When your teeth are covered with plaque, you may notice gum problems. An early sign of gingivitis is a bad taste in your mouth. This bad taste likely smells even worse.
  • Eating Certain Foods. Most people know that consuming certain foods like garlic and coffee cause breath to smell bad. When you are planning for a big date, it’s smart to skip these items.
  • Tobacco Use. Smoking is a bad habit that is not good for your mouth. Besides staining your teeth, it makes your breath offensive.
  • Medical Issues. If you practice a regular oral care routine and still have bad breath, it may be caused by an underlying medical issue. For instance, a sinus infection, diabetes, or gastric reflux may be behind your halitosis. If you suspect a problem, it’s essential to speak with your doctor.

While he spends a lot of his time these days on regenerative medicine, Cameron Clokie is a dental expert by trade. So his tips are definitely worth considering. This guy taught at the University of Toronto for more than a decade after all, as the Professor of Oral and Maxiollofacial Surgery. Ways to Avoid Bad Breath

To ensure that you get kissed on your next date, there are some ways that you can avoid bad breath. Cameron says it’s simple to eliminate mouth odors and to keep your breath fresh.

  • Brush and Floss Daily. The easiest way to enjoy pleasant breath is by brushing and flossing each day. When you brush in the morning and night, you eliminate plaque and food particles that become trapped in your teeth. Flossing works in between teeth. To ward off bacteria in your mouth, Cameron offers a secret tip. He explains that it is wise to use a toothpaste that contains baking soda. Besides your teeth, remember to clean your tongue. With your toothbrush or a special tongue scraper, wipe along its entire surface, and you’ll enjoy fresher breath. Even if you are going on a trip, be sure to pack your toothbrush and floss.
  • Stay Hydrated. Throughout the day, it’s important to drink plenty of water so that your mouth remains moist. Water keeps your saliva flowing, which cleans your mouth of bacteria and trapped food.
  • Go Sugarless. Instead of grabbing a handful of chocolate or other sweet snacks, Dr. Clokie recommends chewing a piece of sugarless candy or gum. These items stimulate the flow of saliva.
  • Clean Your Dentures. If you wear dentures, it’s essential to remove them and properly clean them every night. By soaking them in an antibacterial solution, you’ll rinse away everything that causes bad breath.
  • Visit Your Dentist. If you’ve tried to stop bad breath, but it keeps coming back, it may be smart to see your dentist. With regular visits, your dentist can uncover problems that cause mouth odors, including gum disease, and recommend ways to stop the issues.

The next time that you and your girl are spending some romantic time together, you don’t want to scare her away with your stinky breath. Dr. Cameron Clokie has explained the most common causes of this problem and ways to prevent it from occurring. If you want to show your date that you take good care of yourself and want to get as close as possible, it’s smart to keep your mouth clean and your breath smelling fresh.  For more helpful ideas, be sure to check out Cameron’s Twitter @CameronClokie.

Thanks for those tips, Dr. Cameron Clokie! I agree with going for sugarless gum and candy which is sort of hard to find. And also, your diet matters, too. It’s also one of the underlying reasons for bad breath problems.
