There is no question that Curt Schilling is one of the best players of his generation. He was a dominant pitcher over a very long period of time. He pitched great in many very big games in the playoffs. He helped the Boston Red Sox and the Arizona Diamondbacks win the World Series. He finished second in the voting for the Cy Young Award three times in his career. These facts have still not helped get him into the Hall of Fame. He received 70 percent of the votes cast. This was 20 votes short of what he needed to get in order to be inducted this year.

There are many people who feel that there is a very good chance that Schilling is close enough now that he will finally be inducted next year. The main reason it has taken this long is the fact that there are many people who do not like Schilling. He is a Republican and has a habit of posting his conservative views on social media. His support of President Donald Trump has also not helped him to become very popular with many of the voters. It is believed that he would be in the Hall of Fame right now if he had kept his mouth shut about his various political views.

There are many baseball writers who vote for the Hall of Fame with a major bias where Schilling is concerned. They do not like him as a person. Therefore they withhold their vote for him even when they know that he is deserving of the honor. This has happened many times in the past. Jim Rice had to wait until his final year of eligibility to get into the Hall of Fame because he was not on good terms with many of the writers who had a vote.

The good news for Schilling is that players who get within 20 votes of induction usually always end up getting voted into the Hall of Fame. It would be shocking if his vote total does not rise above the 75 percent threshold next year. There are many younger writers who do not hate Schilling the way that some of the old timers do. These younger baseball writers will be the ones responsible for voting Schilling into the Hall of Fame. Despite his somewhat unlikable personality and his offensive statements, Schilling was a dominant pitcher in his era.
