Ryan Reynolds says that he still wants to make a Deadpool/Wolverine team-up movie, despite the unlikelihood of that happening now.

The star, writer and producer of the Deadpool movies made these comments in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, and addressed the fact that, spoiler alert, the Hugh Jackman version of the character is dead as of the events of last year’s Logan.

“He’s alive and well in my timeline,” Reynolds said, referring to the somewhat confusing structure of Fox’s X-Men franchise. “There is a Logan running around out there with a little bushy chest and his little sharpy, sharpy claws, and he is alive and well and ready to go. I would love that.”

He admits that it’s the Jackman version that he really wants, though now that the actor has retired from the role (after 17 years and 9 movies), he concedes that getting him to return would be “a near-impossible feat.”

“But there’s no human being I love more than Hugh Jackman in that universe, and equally so as a friend,” Reynolds said.

In the comics, Wolverine and Deadpool―both Canadian mutants who translate their healing abilities into extreme violence―have interacted many times. Unusually, their relationship is antagonistic―Wolverine finds Deadpool annoying and Deadpool, the lovable psychopath that he is, often takes jobs that puts him against the X-Men’s interests. That said, they have worked together on occasion, including in one version of X-Force. (A different version of the team is premiering in Deadpool 2.)

Many fans would probably love to see these two together, but it seems unlikely to happen. Without Jackman, Fox would need to recast the role, but this is troubled by the recent deal that is transferring most of the company’s properties to Disney. While production has not ceased on projects like Deadpool 2 or New Mutants, Fox seems reluctant to start new ones that may well be rebooted when the Mouse House takes over.

That said, Disney CEO Bob Iger says that he would like to continue making Deadpool movies, and Reynolds certainly wants to keep starring in them. Could he play opposite whatever Wolverine Disney eventually hires? With the deal still about a year from being finalized, we will just have to wait and see for now.
