Ghostbusters 3 director Jason Reitman recently spoke at a panel at Ghostbusters Fan Fest and revealed new details on the upcoming film. In an emotional tribute to his father, Ivan Reitman, who also directed the first two films in the series, the younger Reitman promised that his film would be a love letter to fans of the franchise. Turning to his father, Reitman got very emotional, telling him how lucky he was to have him in his life and that he loved him. The two embraced before Ivan began telling the assembled crowd, many of whom were dressed in Ghostbuster gear, of the process that went into making the original two films.

Ivan said that going into the original Ghostbusters film, he and the cast looked at it as sort of an “all-star group” as they had all had previous success in Hollywood prior to the start of filming. Jason says that he hopes to recreate that positivity and cast spirit in making Ghostbusters 3. To do so, Jason revealed that he hired an advisory board of previous Ghostbusters crew members to make sure that the new film emulates the originals as close as possible. Jason confesses that at times, it feels that his filmmaking style is akin to archeology. Immersing himself in the mythology of the previous two films, Jason often asks himself what differentiates Ghostbusters from other franchises, such as by examining what goes into the series’ iconic ghosts.

For Jason, part of capturing the spirit of the original films involves finding the perfect balance between the scary and the comedic. While enjoying the original’s comedic exchanges between Bill Murray’s Dr. Venkman and Dan Aykroyd’s Dr. Stanz, as a child, Jason told of being horrified by the film’s Terror Dogs. Jason hopes to bring this type of filmmaking back into today’s pop culture, telling of how it is his aim to scare children who come to see Ghostbusters 3. While the studio is keeping plot details on the upcoming film a secret, it was recently announced that the film would focus on a 12-year-old girl played by Mckenna Grace and her siblings, who will played by Finn Wolfhard and Carrie Coon.

Ghostbusters 3 is scheduled for release on July 10, 2020.
