The “dad bod” has gained a bit of notoriety recently. A “dad bod” is a nickname for, well, the flabby look a man gets as he ages. A humorous nickname definitely is an improvement over calling someone fat and out of shape. Men’s magazines have even pushed the notion such a physique can be attractive.

Middle-ages men must be very leery of anything that tries to downplay the problems associated with flab. Being overweight comes with health risks. And this is to say nothing of the loss of self-esteem that comes with physique decline.

Avoiding fatalism is important as well. When a man ages, he experiences a decline in testosterone. The result is increased difficulty in burning up fat and maintaining lean muscle mass. Fatalism comes into play when men think their age-related lowered testosterone situation means suffering from a “dad bod” is unavoidable. In reality, putting more effort into diet and exercise can lead to great improvements.

The “dad bod” can literally be the result of becoming a father. Being a dad can take up a lot of time making it difficult to fit in that old exercise routine. Stress may play a further role in undermining the mind’s desire to hit the gym.

Of course, Arnold Schwarzenegger is also a dad and he maintains an excellent physique into his 70’s. Although Arnold Schwarzenegger doesn’t exactly live the same lifestyle as the average person, he does perform the same basic weightlifting routines anyone and everyone who visits a gym does. Older men should look to him for inspiration and realize they just need to find time to hit the gym.

Actually, they need to do more than just visit the gym. Older men must be smarter about their workouts if they only have a limited amount of time to hit the weights. Devising a smart workout routine, possibly with the help of a personal trainer, could be the solution to the daunting “dad bod.”
