Having premiered its fourth season earlier this month, Supergirl producers and stars are teasing the future of some of the comic book TV show’s biggest villains. By far one of the biggest reveals was that Superman archenemy Lex Luthor would be making his debut later this season. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, executive producer Robert Rovner talked the circumstances of Luthor’s arrival on the show. Rovner revealed that rather than going toe-to-toe with the Girl of Steel, Luthor comes to the series as part of a larger storyline involving his half-sister Lena, played by series regular Katie McGrath. While not discussing the specific circumstances that reunites Lena and Lex, Rovner said that the show is excited to bring such an iconic character like Lex into the series. Fans are already speculating on how Lex comes to National City, with most theories centering around the character being part of the Children of Liberty, an anti-alien movement that is at the center of a major plot thread for the season.

Actor Sam Witwer also discussed the role his new character, Agent Liberty, plays in the series. The character has been a major figurehead in the aforementioned anti-alien movement on the series. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Witwer said fans can expect much of Agent Liberty’s backstory to be revealed in the season’s third episode, entitled “Man of Steel.” Witwer described the episode as risky because it follows his character rather than the regular cast of Supergirl, who nevertheless pop in and out throughout the story. The episode shows what Agent Liberty and his alter ego, Ben Lockwood, was doing throughout the events of the show’s past seasons. Witwer revealed that “Man of Steel” was the first episode the show filmed this season, and he based his characterization of Agent Liberty off the character’s history as revealed in the episode. Witwer continued by noting that while the show uses words like “ruthless” and “terrifying” to describe his character, this transformation didn’t happen overnight, and hopes that fans will find the character’s journey to that place interesting.

While Luthor and Agent Liberty might be powerful villains for the Girl of Steel to fight, series star Melissa Benoist said that the major adversary for the season is fear itself. Benoist says that the show’s writers wanted this season to be more topical of what is going-on in the world and try to answer the question of if fear be conquered by hope.
