Jon Favreau has confirmed that his upcoming Star Wars TV series will be set between the events of Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, presumably giving the fans a look at how the First Order formed after the Galactic Empire fell.
According to Nerdist editor Dan Casey, he answered this question during the world premiere of Solo: A Star Wars Story, specifying that the series would be set seven years after Return of the Jedi‘s Battle of Endor.
He also hyped up the sort of technology that the movie would use, saying that it would be on par with 2016’s The Jungle Book, which Favreau directed. The film featured a mostly CGI cast of animals with one major human actor.
This announcement is a fairly big deal for fans, as so far the period between the Original Trilogy and the Sequel Trilogy has gone largely unexplored. Naturally, we want to know what happened to turn the seeming victory of the Rebel Alliance into another dictatorship in need of a new Resistance, and this show seems prepared to tell us.
This could also give us interesting insight into characters both old and new. While Favreau says that the show will focus on new additions to the franchise, it would be easy to give us a short glimpse into Leia and Han’s growing family, the future Kylo Ren’s childhood, and Luke’s attempts to revive the Jedi. Many also believe that the show could feature Boba Fett, who has to come back from the dead eventually, right?
This will be the first ever live-action Star Wars TV series. However, it is interesting to note that Disney and Lucasfilm have also recently announced Star Wars: Resistance, an animated series from the creator of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels. It, too, will be set between the Original and Sequel Trilogies, though seemingly much closer to The Force Awakens, with Oscar Isaac playing Poe Dameron and Gwendoline Christie playing Captain Phasma, their respective movie characters.
Beyond the time frame, not much is known about the plot of Favreau’s unnamed Star Wars show. Many suspect it will focus more on the underbelly of the galaxy, but either way, it offers many interesting story opportunities.
