Netflix Cancels Jessica Jones and the Punisher

Netflix has been on a canceling spree lately. Many of the shows the streaming giant has been giving the axe to are based on Marvel characters. ‘Daredevil,’ ‘Iron Fist,’ and ‘Luke Cage’ were all officially cancelled a few months ago. That left ‘The Punisher’ and ‘Jessica Jones’ as the only remaining Marvel shows on Netflix. Netflix has now confirmed that both of those shows have bitten the dust as well. This should not be surprising to people who pay attention to what is going on in the world of streaming. Disney has already announced that their new streaming service will be up and running in the second half of this year. Disney also owns Marvel. Therefore, it is not hard to understand why Disney would not want their streaming rival to have shows featuring characters that they own.

There has been some speculation that Disney will revive some of the Netflix Marvel shows on their own platform. However, that has not been confirmed by Disney. All of the shows had a very big following. Therefore, the news of their cancellation has not gone over well with fans. Rapper Eminem went on a tirade when he heard that ‘The Punisher’ was going away. The comment sections of many TV and entertainment sites have similar sentiments from other Netflix subscribers.

Disney’s plans for their Marvel properties as they relate to their streaming service have not been revealed at this point. However, it seems hard to believe that Disney would spend so much money to acquire the rights to all Marvel characters if they did not intend to make use of them. ‘Jessica Jones’ already has a third season that is totally finished. It will still air on Netflix later this year. That will be the last of the Marvel series to appear on the streaming giant.

The character of the Punisher was not originally planned to have his own series. However, he became very popular during his appearance in the second season of ‘Daredevil.’ Netflix quickly realized that the Punisher would be able to thrive in his own world as a lead character. Therefore, a series starring the Punisher was quickly given the green light. The first two seasons have been very well received. However, there have been some people in the media who have criticize the show for being too violent. The reality is that it would be hard to do a Punisher show without violence.
