Marvel recently announced that it had struck a new partnership with streaming giant Hulu. The new deal will see Marvel produce four new adult animation series for Hulu and one special. Among the upcoming series are Marvel’s Howard the Duck, Marvel’s Tigra and Dazzler Show, Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K., and Marvel’s Hit-Monkey. The four series will lead to Marvel’s The Offenders, a special which will feature characters from all four new series. The Offenders is an obvious reference to Netflix’s The Defenders series, a crossover featuring several characters from Netflix’s Marvel television shows. The deal between Marvel and Hulu comes following news of an increasingly strained relationship between Marvel and Netflix. Over the course of the last several months, Netflix has canceled three of their five Marvel series.
The two companies also provided synopses of each upcoming series. In Marvel’s Howard the Duck, the titular hero and his friend Beverly must find a way to escape the clutches of the evil Dr. Bong. Marvel’s Tigra and Dazzler Show follows the duo as they try to make a name for themselves among other super powered people in Los Angeles. In Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K., the iconic super villain must find a way to efficiently balance managing his evil organization with the responsibilities that come with having a family. Marvel’s Hit-Monkey is a revenge tale following an unlikely assassin as he cuts a swath of destruction through the bustling streets of Tokyo. All four series are being executive produced by Jeph Loeb, who also heads Marvel Television.
According to Reuters, prior to this latest deal, Marvel first partnered with Hulu to bring the comic series Runaways to life. Runaways has had two seasons on Hulu so far, with a third season renewal expected to be announced in the near future. As Disney’s acquisition of Fox nears its final stages, media analysts say that Hulu is likely to get more Marvel properties. In purchasing Fox, Disney will have a controlling stake in Hulu.
