Star Trek fans are preparing for the franchise’s next big adventure in Paramount+’s Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The show is a prequel to the original Star Trek series from 1966 and sees Captain Christopher Pike leading the USS Enterprise on a journey into the unknown. Pike and the crew of the Enterprise are aided in their journey by Spock, the ship’s science officer, who is portrayed by Ethan Peck. Peck recently spoke with reporters from Gizmodo about his character’s internal struggles on Strange New Worlds and how the trauma of Spock’s past will drive his actions in the series.

Peck explains that going into Strange New Worlds, Spock is in a very difficult place. As viewers of the franchise know, prior to the start of the series, Spock lost his adopted sister, Michael Burnham, to time travel, and had an even more traumatic encounter with a time traveler known as the Red Angel in season two of Star Trek: Discovery. Peck says that while these events have put Spock in an emotionally fragile state, he is nevertheless ready to explore what the universe has to offer him and experiment with new things.

One of things that most interested Peck in returning to the role was to discover how Spock learns to balance his human and Vulcan ancestry. Peck elaborates that the traits of both races are diametrically opposite. On the one hand, Spock’s human side is full of emotion while on the other hand, his Vulcan side is rational. Overall, Peck wants to see how Spock learns to control his anger, which is rooted in his mixed heritage. Due to his mixed heritage, Spock sees himself as not belonging to any one particular race and is, thus, without a true home.

Peck adds that in season one of Strange New Worlds, T’Pring, Spock’s fiancé who is played by Gia Sandhu, will help him better understand his Vulcan side. In filming scenes with Sandhu, Peck noted that the two would often take time to carefully consider their words and actions so as to effectively reflect Spock’s identity as an individual of mixed parentage.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premieres on Paramount+ on May 5.
