In the NBA, nightly performances can command respect as players put their All-Star efforts forth. There are also emerging young players trying to make a name for themselves in the league. Sometimes doing that requires a big highlight play and a bit more after it to make headlines. It may even draw the ire of the opposing team or one of the players.
That’s what happened in New York last night as the Knicks defeated the Milwaukee Bucks in overtime. The loss stung enough, but Bucks’ All-Star Giannis Antetounmkpo also perceived a post-play act as disrespect. In fact, according to ESPN’s report, the man known as the “Greek Freak” is looking for vengeance which could involve a punch to the groin.
The play happened within the first quarter of the game at Madison Square Garden. Knicks forward Mario Hezonja got on a fast break with the ball and Giannis was on the pursuit. However, Hezonja rose up for the jam and basically posterized Antetokounmpo, that’s if there are any fans looking for Hezonja posters. He’d finish with just those two points for the night, but his team got the “W.” Giannis had 33 points and 19 boards in a 136-134 overtime loss.
The Knicks’ players dunk was vicious enough on its own with the fans going wild and Giannis down on the court. However, after the jam, Hezonja made the bold move to step over the Bucks star, something fans have seen over and over in another big highlight. That one involved former Cavs coach and then-Lakers star Tyronn Lue falling to the court after an Allen Iverson move. The Sixers star stepped over him during that NBA Finals classic moment.
Hezonja’s moment made the NBA.com top 10 plays for Saturday night with the step over move drawing attention. It also drew Giannis’ after the game. He told the media “I’m going to punch him in the (groin) next time.” That may make for a painful gift as the two teams are scheduled for a Christmas Day game in New York City.
The Knicks forward also replied about the play and post-play move. He mentioned “if you feel fear, this is not the place for you,” adding that New York or the team “is not a place for you” if you feel those fearful emotions during games.
Based on Giannis’ post-game comments, Hezonja may not feel fear but a lot of hurt below the waist. Stay tuned as the drama continues in the 2018-19 NBA season.
