The New York Knicks came into the season with a lot of expectations after adding several key pieces to a team that finished fourth in the Eastern Conference last year. Unfortunately, the team has just not been able to match these high expectations due to injuries and inconsistent play from the veterans on the team. The Knicks entered their game against the San Antonio Spurs on Monday night tied for the crucial 10th spot in the conference.

 First Half

These two teams looked evenly matched in the early goings of Monday’s game. They took turns swapping the lead throughout the first quarter. San Antonio led by five points several times in the quarter, but the Knicks never let the game get out of hand. The teams continued to trade baskets until the buzzer rang with the Spurs holding a slim three-point lead.

San Antonio got off to a hot start in the second quarter, which helped them push the lead to eight points. This lead was completely erased with four minutes left on the clock. The final minutes of the half played out very similar to the first quarter. With the teams responding to every basket, the Knicks went into the locker room at halftime holding a 51-49 lead.

 Second Half

The New York lead remained at two points after four minutes of play in the third quarter. This was the turning point of the game because San Antonio would not get any closer the rest of the night. A big scoring surge helped the Knicks push the lead to seven points with only 12 minutes left to play in regulation.

New York’s dominance continued into the fourth quarter. It seemed like every big shot was finding a way to go in the basket. They were also playing suffocating defense on the other side of the court. It took the Knicks less than six minutes to push the lead to 23 points. With the game in hand, Tom Thibodeau decided to rest most of his key players. The New York backups were not as successful as the stars, but the Knicks still walked away with a 111-96 win.

 Upcoming Schedule

The Knicks are way too talented to be sitting in the bottom half of the standings. They need to ride the momentum of this great performance into a long winning streak. New York plays the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night.
