“Kung Fury,” one of the most popular short films in recent internet history, is getting a feature-length iteration. The most notable news regarding this project is that Michael Fassbender is confirmed to be playing a role. While it remains a mystery as to what character Fassbender will play, the original action-comedy film had David Sandberg, the film’s producer, in the starring role and David Hasselhoff will be returning to the project in a role beyond the singer of the film’s theme song “True Survivor.”
Kung Fury began as a 2015 film that acquired capital through Kickstarter. Beyond its role in setting new records for the crowdfunding site, Kung Fury received the Director’s Fortnight accolade from Cannes and has been viewed over 40 million times. This new film is intended to be a direct sequel and shooting, in both the United States and parts of Europe, will begin in the summer of 2018.
The original film takes place in mid-’80s Miami, where Kung Fury, the best cop in history, and his “Thundercops” units work to defeat the evil Adolf Hitler, who also goes by the name “Kung Fuhrer.” After one Thundercop perishes in the line of duty and the death demoralizes the team to the point of disbanding, a villainous entity manifests before Kung Fuhrer in order to assist King Fuhrer in acquiring a weapon of ultimate power. Kung Fury contacts his tech-proficient ally “Hackerman” in order to travel through time and dimensions in order to save his friends, defend his martial arts dojo and stop evil for good.
The Kung Fury film will be produced under “KatzSmith Productions,” a collaborative group formed from the efforts of Seth Grahame-Smith, David Katzenberg and Aaron Schmidt, whose last film project was “It,” the largest-grossing horror film in history at $700 million. Philip Westgren and Conor McCaughan will also be serving as producers, with Pelle Strandberg serving as the executive producer for Kung Fury’s “Laser Unicorns.” While Endeavor Content and CAA will handle distribution throughout North America, Bloom will handle the film’s international sales and shop the project around Berlin’s International Film Festival.
