Two of the biggest names in the sport of mixed martial arts almost got into a fight outside of the cage. UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman and top contender Jorge Masvidal were both in Miami attending various festivities that are leading up to the Super Bowl. They have been saying some very nasty things to each other because it looks like they are on a collision course. However, things almost got very serious and violent when both fighters crossed paths. A shouting match ensued with both guys almost coming to blows. They were separated before things got out of control.
There are some people who believe that the altercation was staged to sell an upcoming fight between Usman and Masvidal. Top UFC welterweight Leon Edwards is one of the people who has made this accusation. Edwards already has a fight booked against Tyron Woodley. He has said that he wants a title shot if he is able to get past Woodley. If the UFC does indeed award Edwards a title shot in his next fight, he will be fighting either Usman or Masvidal. This is why he was paying such close attention to the incident in Miami. Edwards feels that the UFC has devolved into the WWE over the past few years. He thinks that fighters are staging altercations in an attempt to drum up interest in their fights.
The Usman and Masvidal altercation is certainly getting a lot of coverage. The video of the confrontation is all over social media. The video has also been posted on all of the major sports and MMA websites. Therefore, they accomplished their goal if everything was staged and they just wanted to get publicity. There are many people who like to watch fighters confront each other when they are out of the cage. However, some people said that it did not look very real to them.
Usman and Masvidal have not signed any contracts to fight each other as of yet. The fight is supposedly in negotiations. However, Usman recently said that he wanted to face retired fighter Georges St. Pierre. It is very doubtful that fight will ever come to fruition. Fighting Masvidal would make Usman more money that any other fight that is currently available to him. It is not an exaggeration to say that Jorge Masividal is the second biggest star in the UFC behind only the legendary Conor McGregor.
