Two of the biggest disappointments in the first month of the 2019 NFL season have been the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cincinnati Bengals. Both teams had lost their first three games of the season. The Steelers had a very good excuse for being that bad. They lost their starting quarterback. The Bengals do not have an excuse like that. They are just a very bad team. Both winless squads met in Pittsburgh at Heinz Field. The Steelers won the game very easily by a score of 27-3. The Bengals were predicted to be one of the worst teams this season. It seems like that will be the case.

This is the first season the Steelers have been without star wide receiver Antonio Brown. Their offense has definitely taken a serious hit. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin believes that the team can still make a serious run at the playoffs. He feels that the Cleveland Browns and the Baltimore Ravens are not going to run away with the division. He said starting the season 0-3 really hurt them. However, it did not totally destroy their chances of getting to the playoffs. Tomlin feels that eight wins might be enough to win the division. Only time will tell if he is right.

The Steelers have been forced to start a rookie at QB because of the season-ending injury to their starting QB. This is not an ideal situation for a team that thinks of itself as a serious playoff contender. The team has been taking the situation in stride. The players are not getting too down or depressed. They feel that as long as they don’t fall too far behind the Browns and the Ravens, they will have a real chance to make the playoffs. The Steelers are currently 1-3. Meanwhile, both the Browns and Ravens are 2-2.

One thing the Steelers have going for them is the fact that their schedule does get a lot easier. There are quite a few games that are very winnable for this team. They just need to avoid any more serious injuries to their key skill position players. Many people in the sports media wrote off the Steelers very quickly as soon as their starting QB went down with an elbow injury that required surgery. There is a chance that these people wrote them off much too quickly. We will have to wait and see.
