There is no question that the Boston Red Sox have very high expectations for the 2019 season. The team won the World Series last year in a season where everything seemed to go right. The same cannot be said for the start of the 2019 campaign. The team’s pitching and hitting have left a lot to be desired. They started the season on the West Coast and only managed to compile a 3-8 record. The Red Sox played poorly in every aspect of the game. They were looking forward to their home opener and getting back to the friendly confines of Fenway Park. However, the home cooking did not change the fortunes of the team. The Red Sox lost to the Blue Jays 7-5.
The home opener for the Red Sox was strange for many reasons. First of all, Chris Sale continued his poor pitching for the team. He has gotten off to such a bad start that some people within the organization are starting to get a bit concerned. Sale allowed five earned runs in only five innings of work. He also allowed a Blue Jays player to steal home. This is something that you hardly ever see in baseball these days.
The Red Sox are now 3-9. This is definitely something that none of the supposed baseball experts saw coming. The Boston players were awarded their World Series rings for last year during the Opening Day festivities at Fenway Park. However, the Red Sox currently do not look anything like the team that dominated baseball last year. Not much is expected from the Toronto Blue Jays in 2019. They have a very young team without much talent. However, they played very well on Tuesday afternoon. Every time the Red Sox would score a run to get closer, the Blue Jays would also score a run to stay ahead. The young Toronto players did not seem to be overmatched.
The Red Sox are currently sitting in last place in the American League East. This is not something that they could have envisioned. The season is just getting started. However, there are a lot of things that are going to need to change if Boston is going to turn this season around. The hitters are swinging at too many pitches out of the strike zone. This includes superstar outfielder Mookie Betts. It remains to be seen what adjustments the Red Sox players will make.
