The 2018 World Series was won by the Boston Red Sox. As dominant as they were last year, the start of the 2019 season has not gone according to plan for the Red Sox. They have now lost four out of the first five games they have played after a humiliating 7-0 loss to the Oakland A’s. The starting pitching for Boston continues to be a huge concern. Starter David Price gave up three home runs. The A’s also hit a fourth home run off a Boston reliever. Khris Davis continued the great start to his season by blasting his fifth home run of the young campaign.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora seemed to be bewildered watching the struggles of his team from the dugout. After the game, Cora did not have any explanation as to why his group of very highly paid pitchers are getting knocked around game after game. He just said that it is still very early and his pitchers would eventually figure things out. Red Sox fans can only hope this will be the case. Otherwise, Boston will be in for a very long season.

Chris Sale will get his second start of the season when he faces the A’s Tuesday night at the Oakland Coliseum. He was lit up by the Seattle Mariners in his first start of the year. This was a surprise because Sale is one of the game’s most dominant starters and the Mariners do not have many good hitters in their lineup. Sale said that his command simply was not there in his first start. Otherwise, he said he felt fine and did not blame his poor performance on any type of injury. Oakland shocked many experts last year when they won 97 games and made the playoffs. However, they lost to the New York Yankees in the wild card game.

The players on the Red Sox are remaining calm during their difficult start to the season. Outfielder Mookie Betts was last year’s MVP in the American League. He said after the game that it is a very long season. Even the best teams have parts of the year when they play poorly. He believes that the poor start for Boston is nothing to be concerned about. The team will be right where it should be at the end of the season. Betts said that the Red Sox have too much talent to fail.
