The first five weeks of the Major League Baseball season have been very tough for the Boston Red Sox. They were having a very hard time winning games and their record was very bad. However, it seems they have finally righted the ship. Their win on Wednesday night finally got the team to the .500 mark. The Red Sox were expected to battle the New York Yankees for the top spot in the American League East. Things have not worked out that way. Instead, the Tampa Bay Rays have gotten off to a great start and they lead the division. The Yankees have also played very well despite having many injuries to key players.
Chris Sale of the Red Sox and Andrew Cashner of the Baltimore Orioles matched up in a fantastic pitching duel on Wednesday evening at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Sale wound up going eight innings and only giving up a single earned run. He did not walk any batters and he struck out 14. Cashner was up to the challenge. He only gave up a single run over six innings of work. Neither pitcher was rewarded for their efforts. The bullpens of each team took over and both pitchers got a no-decision.
The Red Sox eventually broke through by scoring a single run in the top of the 12th inning to take a 2-1 lead. They were able to hold on for a win by that same score. The Red Sox now have a record of 19-19. They have been through some very difficult times so far this season. However, they have played very well during the past week. They have been able to dig themselves out of the large hole they were in early in the year. It promises to be a very exciting baseball season in New England.
There is no question that the Red Sox are loaded with talent. It was just a matter of them putting all of the pieces together and playing as one cohesive unit. They have been very fortunate that they have not suffered any key injuries so far this season like the Yankees. Boston now need to put the first five weeks of the season behind them and focus on reeling off more wins. The Rays do not have a lead that is insurmountable at this point. There is still a ton a baseball yet to be played in 2019.
