Portugal defeated Uruguay 2-0 through a second-half header to enable Portugal to pass through the Group H knockout stages while still having an extra game in hand. Portugal’s Bruno Fernandes scored both goals as they claimed victory for the top spot. Cristiano Ronaldo’s header did not have contact with the cross from Bruno Fernandes.
Portugal should have taken the lead a minute after a protester had encroached the field while carrying a rainbow flag while in a t-shirt attire written “Respect for Iranian women” and “Save Ukraine.” Iran has the same background as Ukraine; both are Shia-majority countries and Russia’s traditional rival in Eastern Europe. Ronaldo had a free kick from 25 yards out that he aimed towards the goal, but Rochet made a save as the ball hit the post.
Uruguay was close to getting an equalizer when Maxi Gomes got in as a substitute, with his goal hitting a post before Suarez failed to score from a close range. They were, however, punished in the 90th minute when a VAR check established that Jose Maria Gimenez caught the ball in the box, and Bruno Fernandes converted from the spot.
Portugal’s dominance during the first half of the game would have been better for viewers when a penalty kick for Uruguay was not converted, giving Portugal a chance to take the lead in the second half. Uruguay started to dominate as they secured ball possession in Portugal’s box. They had the best opportunity when Rodrigo Bentancur managed to weave through Portugal’s defense, only to be denied by goalkeeper Diogo Costa.
Nuno Mendes left the playing ground in tears after he was forced to come out after sustaining an injury. Yet, nothing much changed regarding Portugal’s second half after the game had been restated after a protester from the crowd invaded the pitch. In the last 15 minutes, Uruguay displayed exemplary goal-scoring abilities that could put the game beyond reach. They, however, missed critical chances that could have changed the game.
In conclusion, Portugal went some distance to finish top of the group. Uruguay fell short and had key moments during the game that could have given them a better result. This game would, however, gain Portugal a game in hand and qualify if they win it. With 3 points, Portugal goes through as group winners.
