Nigeria’s group is regarded as the group of death. The group features the two time World Cup champions Argentina. However, the team was left topping from the bottom after losing to Croatia yesterday. Leonel Messi’s squad watched the game behind settees as they crossed their fingers for the game to end in a draw. Surprisingly, the super eagles stunned Iceland two goals. This meant that Argentina trailed at the bottom of the group with only 1 point. They have a very challenging assignment as they face Nigeria on Tuesday. They will play the Africans in St. Petersburg.

Nigeria’s goals against Iceland were scored by Ahmed Musa. The player was deemed not too good for English side Leicester City. Musa was duly sent back on loan at his former club CSKA Moscow. According to football experts, Russia fully suits Musa compared to the East Midlands. This was evident with his two goals that came at the 49th and 75th minute. The two brilliant goals ensured that the Super Eagles climbed the second position in their group. They garnered three points. This was two points clear above Argentina and Iceland. For the Super Eagles if Iceland gained the three points, it would have been worse for them. Iceland were sure they would gather three points only to be shocked. Now, Nigeria’s fate will depend on the outcome between Iceland and the group winners Croatia.

Who knows, Iceland could again snatch back the second position. However, it will take everything that they have including their willpower to pick themselves up after their loss to Nigeria. Their defeat to Nigeria summed up their day when Sigurdsson flashed over the post a late penalty that was awarded by VAR. This was after Ebuehi fouled Alfred Finnbogason. During the first half, Icelanders were the best team compared to Nigeria. However, the Africans displayed marginal improvement after they lost to Croatia last Saturday. After Kick-off, inside three minutes, Sigurdsson had already tested Nigeria’s goalkeeper Francis Uzoho. The Super Eagles teenager goalkeeper managed to save a 25 yard free-kick.

Sigurdsson, the Everton midfielder then had a clear sight of goal but delayed wasting the opportunity by shooting too close to Francis Uzoho. Iceland’s first start with intense attack meant that they were going to glow throughout the evening. They were awarded with plenty of Corners, throw-ins and crosses. The game was fitful.
