There has been quite a bit of player movement in the NFL since the free agency period kicked in. There was also a very big trade. It has been no secret that the Jacksonville Jaguars wanted to upgrade at the quarterback position. They have succeeded in doing that by making a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles for former Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles. The Jaguars have been suffering with the poor and inconsistent play of Blake Bortles for the past several years. However, those days are now over. The Jaguars officially released Bortles after the Foles trade became official.

Foles became a star and a folk hero when he took over the Eagles offense in 2017 after the injury to starting QB Carson Wentz. Foles played brilliantly in the playoffs and led the Eagles to a victory over Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl. He was named the MVP of the game in the process. Carson Wentz was injured once again in 2018 and Foles was called upon to be a hero. However, he was not able to duplicate his magic from the previous year. The Eagles were eliminated from the playoffs by the New Orleans Saints.

According to Forbes.com, the addition of Foles as the leader of the offense begins a new era for the Jaguars. The team played very well in 2017. However, they regressed badly last year. Much of their problems can be blamed on the departed Bortles. It is important to note that Foles has shown a great deal of inconsistency in his career. Yes, he does have a Super Bowl win under his belt. People tend to focus on that and forget about all of his shortcomings. Foles is definitely a huge upgrade from Bortles. However, he needs to play much better on a regular basis to truly be considered an elite QB in the NFL.

The Jaguars and their fans are expecting very big things in the 2019 season because of the addition of Foles. It remains to be seen if Foles will be able to deliver on these very lofty expectations. It would not hurt for the Jaguars to go after a wide receiver in the draft. Like any QB, Foles is only as good as the talent that surrounds him. The Jaguars do not have a lot of offensive firepower. They need to upgrade at several positions to make the Foles trade worthwhile.
