When the Feds cut interest rates to zero to stimulate the economy, President Trump gave Jerome Powell a thumbs-up. That thumbs-up was the first time Mr. Trump gave Powell credit for doing his job. Over the past two years, Trump complained about Powell raising interest rates at the wrong time, and not cutting rates soon enough.
The interest rate cut won’t stimulate an economy stuck in the arms of an invisible financial villain that doesn’t care about money, social status, or the color of one’s skin. COVID-19 is the enemy politicians wanted to avoid. But the nasty bug continues to teach Americans their government didn’t prepare for a health crisis of this magnitude, even though the White House received reports a pandemic was in the works in January.
The interest rate cut, and the Feds $700 billion cash-injection into capital markets will do little to boost economic growth. The economy is in the park position until the virus disappears, according to the New York Times.
The stimulus package Congress approved, and the Senate passed helps some people deal with the pandemic, but it’s not enough to keep people out of bankruptcy. The $1 trillion stimulus package McConnell and the Republicans concocted without the help of Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats still sits in lawmaker mud as American leaders try to figure out how much, and who should get a cash payment, as well as how much money they should give big corporations and small businesses.
McConnell told the press by Midnight Friday the stimulus package would pass the Senate, but that didn’t happen. As Congress fights to get what they want, people drop like flies because Trump and his allies dropped the coronavirus ball, according to the Washington Post.
But President Trump’s coronavirus approval rating is over 50%. When the president decided to tell the public the drug used to treat malaria, hydroxychloroquine could help cure infected people, his rating when up. But when infectious disease expert Dr. Tony Fauci balked at that premise, Americans knew Mr. Trump was up to his usual tricks, according to the New York Times.
Mr. Trump got mad when Dr. Fauci shot holes in Trump’s idea to use other FDA drugs to treat coronavirus patients. The president wants to control an enemy he can’t control, and the stress from trying to control it shows every time stands behind a podium, according to the Huffington Post.
