David Ortiz, also known by the nickname of Big Papi, is a retired Major League Baseball player who is best known for spending 14 years of his 20-year career with the Boston Red Sox. Ortiz also played for the Minnesota Twins for six years before being traded off to the Boston Red Sox, where he switched between playing designated hitter and first base, depending on whether he was facing opponents in the National League or the American League.
According to time.com, although Ortiz was easily one of the most popular players in the MLB throughout his career, especially throughout his 14-year stint with the Boston Red Sox. However, it seems as if a group of people in the Dominican Republic didn’t feel too favorably about David “Big Papi” Ortiz, as someone shot him in the back while he was relaxing at the Dial Bar and Lounge, a popular restaurant in East Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, this past weekend.
Yesterday, on Wednesday, June 12, 2019, law enforcement officials in the Dominican Republic announced that they had apprehended and charged the alleged shooter with enough to keep him behind bars for a long time, at least if one assumes that he will be found guilty by a court of law once he goes to trial soon enough.
Also, authorities from the Dominican Republic announced that they had successfully gotten their collective hands on five other people who are said to have been involved in the organization of the crime.
Authorities were able to identify all of the people who were involved in the crime after they watched high-quality video surveillance footage of the incident.
Just before the men got to the bar that Big Papi was hanging out at, they hopped out of a van and unloaded a motorcycle out of the back of the van.
Next, the man who shot David Ortiz, who was identified as Rolfy Ferreyra Cruz in yesterday’s announcement put out by the Dominican Republic authorities, then rode that motorcycle to just outside of where Ortiz was located before shooting him. He was apprehended by a mob of innocent bystanders before he could get away.
It’s not clear why the group of six men wanted to shoot David Ortiz, though the authorities did find out that they spend some $8,000, which comes out to about 400,000 Dominican Pesos, on the event.
Footage also shows the criminals making practice runs in the days leading up to the shooting.
