While the “Wonder Woman” film somewhat paid homage to the character’s long history within the comics by setting the bulk of its footage in the war of the past, it remained unclear when the imminent sequel would take place. Fortunately, some new information regarding the setting of “Wonder Woman 2” has finally been unveiled.
Geoff Johns, current president and CCO for DC Entertainment, unveiled the latest detail for the film on the company’s Facebook page on Friday, June 1. Johns’ approach was to upload the film’s logo, a static image reading “WW84.” Said logo has an aesthetic reminiscent of old VHS tapes from the 1980s, as well as a snow effect that was commonly experienced while watching programs on a television set with insufficient signal strength.
While some were prescient enough to figure out that Wonder Woman 2 would occur during the Cold War, the news that the film will begin in 1984 gives a much narrower focus on what Gal Gadot’s Diana could possibly have to deal with in order to preserve the world. The setting also means that six decades will have passed from the original film’s focus on The Great War.
A quick assessment of 1984’s relevant to the Cold War between the United States of America and the United Soviet Socialist Republic indicates that it was the penultimate year of that conflict.
- The USSR boycotted the 1984 Olympic Games that were held in Los Angeles.
- Reagan made an unaired quip during a speech to the nation. While Reagan joked that the United States would be bombing the Soviet Union, the unaired recording made it into the hands of USSR intelligence and the foreign power escalated its defenses in response.
- Indira Ghandi, wife of pacifist and spiritual leader Mahatma Ghandi, was assassinated by her bodyguards while serving as the third prime minister of India.
- Margaret Thatcher attempted to strengthen diplomatic ties between the United Kingdom and the USSR by offering to meet with Mikhail Gorbachev.
Between Diana’s status as an icon of female power and knowledge that the villainous Cheetah will appear, the events surrounding Mrs. Ghandi might prove a fruitful starting point. Cheetah’s more recent origins involve a magical totem to a jungle god; it would not be much work to place that statue in one India’s massive jungles.
Wonder Woman 2 is planned for a November 1 release in 2019.
