According to Avengers: Infinity War co-director Joe Russo, Thanos (Josh Brolin) and and Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) will have a particular connection in the upcoming superhero epic.
He made during an interview he and his brother and co-director, Anthony, had with The Telegraph India.
“I think he has the most specific connection to Tony because Tony is a futurist, and he has predicted a threat like Thanos,” Russo explained. “It’s lived in his brain even though he couldn’t name it.”
He went on to say that, while all the heroes will have to battle against the Mad Titan, But “I think this is intrinsic to Tony’s psychology, and because Tony started it all with Iron Man, he has a special connection to the threat that’s facing him.”
Avengers: Infinity War is a ridiculously ambitious film, bringing together basically every major character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe films—about eighty in total. The Russo have said before that there is no “main character” of the movie, save for the villain Thanos himself, but fans are still expecting Iron Man to get special attention, given his prominent role in the franchise so far.
Creating Ultron in the second Avengers film was all to prevent the sort of crisis that the world is now facing, and while that obviously didn’t pan out, it shows that Tony has been waiting for such a disaster for a long time. Unfortunately, as in that case, his well-intentioned actions in Captain America: Civil War have also put him on the border between a hero and a villain—with Infinity War and its sequel next year, he finally has a chance to redeem himself. With him leaving the franchise, many expect him to do so with his life.
In the meantime, Tony will have to juggle the fight against Thanos with his other, more personal demons: repairing his falling out with Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans), for example, and passing the torch to his superhero student, Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland). How they will all manage to come together and face the Titanic threat that is Thanos, and what the relationship between Iron Man and the arch-villain will be like, remains to be seen. until Avengers: Infinity War is finally released on April 27, 2018.
