Slasher legend Michael Myers made his way back into theaters last October with the reboot of Halloween, leaving fans of the genre eager for more. News of a sequel began spreading before the film’s release, but producer Jason Blum says that the studio is taking its time with greenlighting another film in the series. Speaking with CinePOP earlier this week, the producer says that while he is keen on making another entry in the series, nothing is officially set yet with Universal Pictures, the studio that distributes the Halloween series.
Halloween was a rousing success for the horror genre. In addition to making over $253 million, a slasher genre record, the reboot was the franchise’s best reviewed film since the 1978 original. Owing to the financial and critical triumph of the film, fans quickly started asking questions about a potential follow up. Speaking with reporters, Laurie Strode actress Jamie Lee Curtis said that she would love to return to the franchise so long as director David Gordon Green also agreed to helm to the film. Franchise creator and composer John Carpenter also expressed interest in returning to score the next film in the series.
Blum also told CinePOP of plans to make a shared universe with other horror films produced by Blumhouse Productions. Currently called the Blumhouse Cinematic Universe, Blum says that films such as Happy Death Day 2U might be folded into the same universe as Michael Myers and Halloween. Blum says that plans for a shared universe are currently in the very early stages and he still has to decide which films would be part of such a universe. Blumhouse Productions also produces films in the Insidious and Purge series. Should a shared universe go forward, Blum says that each film would have its own unique identity and stand apart from other entries in the universe. In addition to Happy Death Day 2U, Blumhouse is producing Us, which will be directed by Get Out’s Jordan Peele, and an adaptation of the classic horror film The Invisible Man.
