June is Men’s Health Month. Most men do not feel comfortable talking about their health. In fact, many men would rather talk about their jobs or sports than their health. Many men will only go to the doctor when they can no longer do what they used to do. Others will only go when their partner asks them to. Unfortunately, some men do not get to to the doctor until it is too late.

Most women do not have a problem going to the doctor. They will go to the doctor for cancer screenings and birth control. However, many men are reluctant to go to the doctor. Physicians recommend that if you have not seen a doctor by June, then you should go during Men’s Health Month.

Dominque Greco is a medical doctor who works for Providence Seaside Hospital. She stated that she educates people about what they can do to protect their health. Blood pressure, exercise and diet are some of the things that are discussed during the doctor’s visit.

Dr. Greco also educates people about heart disease. It is the top killer, and smoking is one of the things that contributes to it. Many men avoid the doctor because they are afraid of hearing something that they do not want to hear. However, it is better to get a health problem detected early.

Many men are worried about getting screened for prostate cancer. However, that is not a test that everyone needs. If you have a family history of this condition or risk factor, then it may be recommended.

Dr. Greco recommends that men who are over the age of 50 get screened for colon cancer. You can get a FIT kit, which allows you to complete a screening at home. All you have to do is collect the sample and mail it. You can also get a colonoscopy, which will need to be done every 10 years. For more info, visit menshealthmonth.org.
