Actors like to tip their hats to roles that made them famous. In Ryan Reynolds’ case, he tips a black-and-red modified ninja mask. The actor recently referred to Deadpool as the “greatest gig of his life.” He did so, appropriately enough, on X-Men Day through his official Twitter account.
X-Men Day certainly isn’t an official national holiday, but it is one the fans of the mutant heroes celebrate. Over the decades, the writers and artists behind X-Men tales captivated imaginations by presenting stories with incredibly memorable characters. Deadpool is one of them.
Ryan Reynolds’ career gained a massive boost thanks to the success of the 2016 Deadpool movie. Diehard fans point out he debuted as Deadpool in the film X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but that version of Deadpool/Wade Wilson wasn’t true to the comics. The lame appearance as Deadpool almost killed Reynolds’ chances to continue with the character in future movies. Eventually, Fox gave the green light to a relatively low-budgeted Deadpool solo outing.
Reynolds wasn’t likely perceived as someone capable of delivering a big hit. His starring role as the Green Lantern turned out to be a dud. With a lesser-known hero in a less-hyped film, Fox didn’t expect much. Since Deadpool is part of the X-Men franchise, Fox probably felt some “overflow” fans from the hit movies would check the film out. They did and more. Deadpool and its sequel pulled in hundreds of millions of dollars in ticket sales worldwide.
The unexpected success of the first Deadpool movie derives greatly from the decision to produce an R-rated comedic take on superhero films. Deadpool parodied the current comic book movie boom. And the flippant comedy repeatedly reveled in poor taste. The film was like nothing mainstream fans expected. Fans of the Deadpool comic books, however, knew this interpretation was an honest homage to the conflicted and wacky Wade Wilson of Marvel Comics.
Fox deserves credit for allowing Reynolds and the behind-the-camera talent to do their own thing. Ultimately, Fox benefited greatly from the endeavor. The studio gained a profit-generating franchise to replace the utterly sunk Fantastic Four series.
Ryan Reynolds may be the biggest winner of all. Like fellow Fox X-Men alumnus Hugh Jackman, Reynolds parlayed his hero fame into other successful leading roles. His newest film, Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, adds another mega-hit to his expanding resume. Will Reynolds branch out from comedy, though?
