Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi finished its 6-episode season earlier this week with an explosive confrontation between the venerable Jedi master and his former-apprentice-turned-Sith-Lord, Darth Vader. The episode also featured cameo appearances by two fan favorite characters from the franchise’s past and presented a moment of redemption for the Inquisitor Reva, who is played by actress Moses Ingram.
Obi-Wan vs Vader
Much of the action in the episode surrounded the lightsaber duel between Kenobi and Vader. The struggle between the two sci-fi icons ebbed and flowed across the barren terrain of an unnamed desert world before Obi-Wan emerged victorious, damaging Vader’s life support system and slicing his signature helmet in two. Gazing into the face of former friend, Kenobi apologized for failing Vader as a teacher and mentor. Ever defiant, Vader replies that his former master did not fail Anakin Skywalker. Rather, Vader declares that he had destroyed his former self. Accepting that his friend and student had died long ago, Kenobi leaves the wounded villain before referring to him as “Darth.”
Reva’s Redemption and Cameos
A secondary storyline in the finale saw the former Inquisitor Reva set out to murder the child Luke Skywalker in retaliation for Vader’s slaughter of padawans during the Jedi Purge. Easily subduing Luke’s Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru, Reva cornered Skywalker in the Dune Sea and was about to strike the final blow before she came to the realization that she could not kill a child. Taking Skywalker back to Kenobi and his aunt and uncle, Reva asked the Jedi master if she had failed the padawans Vader had murdered by not taking vengeance on his son. Kenobi replied that Reva’s act of mercy honored her fallen friends and that she can now discover her own path.
As the episode closed out, viewers were also treated to cameo appearances by two fan favorite Star Wars characters. Ian McDiarmid’s Emperor Palpatine was shown conversing with Vader on the renewed hunt for Kenobi and noted that Vader seemed conflicted on the fate of his former master. Liam Neeson also returned as Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn. As Kenobi traveled into the deserts of Tatooine, he was shocked to see the Force Ghost of Jinn strolling beside him. Smiling at his former student, Jinn says that he was always with Kenobi.
