Henry Cavill, who plays Clark Kent/Superman in the DC Extended Universe, posted a video to show fans how some of his flying stunts are done, set to the character’s iconic theme music composed by John Williams.
In an Instagram post, Cavill first warned fans not to watch the video if they wanted the process spoiled, then added “let me show you behind the scenes on Justice League! Stunt team magic bringing Supes to life, John Williams and Hans Zimmer raising him to those lofty heights…..and then there’s me, who channelling a little bit of Spiderman with my hands,” a little self-deprecation about the way that he occasionally unclenches his fists during the flying scenes.
The video shows Cavill in a studio, hooked up to a contraption that can suspend him both horizontally and vertically; we see people switch him for what are presumably landings/takeoffs or the like. We see him make the traditional flying post (arms extended) and even some fighting scenes, with a stuntman pretending to take punches as Cavill/Superman glides easily out of the way.
Through it all, we hear both the class John Williams music—made famous in the 1978 Richard Donner film and its sequels—as well as the Hans Zimmer version that was used first in 2013’s Man of Steel, the beginning of the DCEU and of Cavill’s take on the classic superhero.
There is a certain symbolism to this choice. The DCEU has been divisive from the start for its dour tone, with many disliking how severely Man of Steel chose to rewrite and deconstruct the character; since then, attempts have been made to put the franchise in a friendlier, more mainstream direction. Justice League basically tried to retcon Superman into being a more traditional portrayal, including with the classic tune, and while a bit awkward, even many critics agreed that Cavill did a good job as a friendlier Man of Tomorrow.
It is not clear what is in store for the character moving forward, as Warner Bros. tries to determine the best course from their shared universe. But Cavill seems prepared to fly again, and many fans are hoping that his more upbeat take on the character will get a belated Man of Steel 2, or a chance to shine in some other upcoming movie.
