All of the current and upcoming streaming services have been reviewed by many of the entertainment and tech publications. There is no question that the biggest threat to the dominance of Netflix is Disney+. There is a very clear reason for this. All of the shows and movies that are available on the new streaming service are made by Disney. This means that they will always be available. There is no threat that they will be taken away at some point in the future. The same cannot be said for many of the shows and movies that are currently on Netflix. The streaming giant has relied on licensed content to grow its subscriber base.
The thing about licensed shows is that Netflix has to renew the rights to those shows every so often. There are times when Netflix is not able to bring back a show that is popular. Therefore, Netflix subscribers will lose access to it. This is what happened with “The Office” and “Friends.” These are two of the most popular shows on Netflix. However, the companies that own the rights to those shows are not allowing Netflix to extend their license agreement on either show. This is because they will be starting their own streaming services to compete with Netflix. Disney does not have to worry about something like this happening to the shows they offer.
When people subscribe to a streaming service, it is frustrating to have certain shows disappear before they are done watching them. Netflix viewers have had this happen to them far too often in the past. It will keep happening to the streaming giant as more companies pull back their own content to use on their own streaming services. This is the nature of the streaming wars that are currently going on.
Disney is banking on one of their major selling points being the fact that all of the same content will always be available on their platform. It will never disappear without warning like Netflix. This would seem to be a good reason for people to choose Disney+ if they can only afford to choose one streaming service. This will become an even bigger factor as time goes on and Netflix loses more of their vast catalog of licensed content. There is no question that the pressure is on Netflix to come up with quality original content to prevent people from bolting for Disney+.
