For eight seasons, fans of comic book entertainment were enthralled by Arrow on The CW. The series followed the adventures of Oliver Queen and his vigilante alter ego Green Arrow. The series also led to the establishment of the Arrowverse, which includes series like The Flash and Supergirl. In one of the final episodes of the show, writers took viewers to Star City in the year 2040, where Queen’s grownup daughter, actress Katherine McNamara’s Mia Smoak, was following in her father’s footsteps. Intended as a backdoor pilot for a new series entitled Green Arrow and the Canaries, the episode also featured Katie Cassidy as Laurel Lance and Juliana Harkavy as Dinah Drake.

While the backdoor pilot received good ratings and was met with a positive response from the show’s fanbase, thus far, The CW has yet to comment on if they will be picking up Green Arrow and the Canaries for next season. Many fans were confused as to why there has been so little news on the show, particularly because Mia played such a big role in Arrow’s last season. The young heroine traveled back in time to help her father with the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths and Queen even symbolically passed on the mantle of Green Arrow to her by gifting Mia her own suit. With fans questioning the status of Green Arrow and the Canaries, executive producer Marc Guggenheim posted an update to Twitter. Guggenheim told fans that they will learn if Green Arrow and the Canaries will be picked up sometime in May.

Guggenheim’s news comes as a major relief to fans. While there remains uncertainty over the show’s future, most fans see it as a guarantee that the network will order the pilot to series. These fans point out that the series has a built-in fanbase and will be part of an already large franchise of series, including the new Superman & Lois show that will debut next year. The backdoor pilot also left many plot threads unresolved. Particularly, the pilot’s cliffhanger ending saw Oliver Queen’s son kidnapped by a group of mysterious villains. JJ, Mia’s fiancé, also had his memories of the erased timeline restored, revealing to him that he was once the villain Deathstroke.
