Netflix has had many original shows and movies that have generated a lot of buzz. However, very few projects in the history of the streaming giant have generated as much excitement as “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie.” The film was not announced. It was made completely in secret to avoid any spoilers from being revealed ahead of time. Vince Gilligan, the man who created the original “Breaking Bad” series, wrote and directed the film. Aaron Paul returns as Jesse Pinkman, a role that won the actor three Emmy Awards for Best Supporting Actor.
Netflix will usually not give any comment about how many people watch their programs. They like to keep this info secret for some reason. However, on certain occasions, Netflix likes to crow when viewer totals are very high. Such was the case for their latest movie. They announced that more than 25 million people have watched “El Camino” in a single week. This is a massive total that had to be beyond the company’s wildest expectations. The movie ties up all of the loose ends that the final episode of “Breaking Bad” did not resolve. For the most part, fans of the show have liked the way that Jesse’s story has reached its resolution. However, there are still people who hope to see Jesse on a future episode of the spin-off “Better Call Saul.”
There has been talk that Netflix will produce another “Breaking Bad film” after the smashing success of “El Camino.” It would be possible because Jesse Pinkman is still alive and well at the end of the movie. However, the movie seems to conclude his story by having him escape to Alaska. It would be difficult to have him continue to be involved in a criminal underworld when he is living in a rural area.
“El Camino” is now officially one of the biggest and most successful original productions in the history of Netflix. It is a bright spot for the company. However, there might be darker days ahead in the near future. The launches of new streaming services owned by Apple and Disney are imminent. These services will certainly take some customers away from Netflix. It remains to be seen how many people flee Netflix for one of the other new streaming services. For now, Netflix can brag about their latest triumph. 25 million viewers is an amazing accomplishment.
