James Gunn says that he has a secret to reveal at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, but what it could be remains to be seen.

He made this announcement on social media, explaining that he would be at the annual fan convention on Friday, July 20th. (The event is held from Wednesday the 18th through Sunday the 22nd).

“I will see many of you at #SanDiegoComicCon[…] with something dark, sweet and special,” he tweeted, along with a photo of his official SDCC placard.

Gunn is best known as the director of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies, which came out in 2014 and 2017; a third is expected sometime during Phase 4. While he has worked on several other films in his career, both in front of and behind the camera, it was his work in the MCU that made him a major Hollywood name.

But whatever his SDCC plans are, they presumably have nothing to do with Guardians of the Galaxy, since Marvel Studios is mostly sitting the event out this year. (The next MCU movie, Captain Marvel, does not release for eight months, and things beyond that are being kept largely mysterious for now.) So the question becomes, what will Gunn be announcing at the convention?

Gunn has used this newfound clout to get a few other projects going in recent years. In 2016 he wrote and produced a horror thriller called The Belko Experiment, which ended with a sequel hook; perhaps he could be ready to announce a follow-up? He is also said to be working on another horror movie, about which little is known, as well as the Starsky and Hutch reboot being made by Amazon. Either one of these could be something that he plans to discuss.

Being a big fan of Marvel, Gunn could also be working on comic book adaptations outside of the MCU. Sony will be showing off their two Spider-Man spin-off movies, Venom and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse; neither is known to include Gunn, but maybe that will be announced? Another possibility is ROM: Spaceknight, which is being adapted by Paramount; perhaps Gunn is involved in that, seeing as he has mentioned wanting to use the character in the MCU? For now we’ll have to wait and see.
