HBO previously released a teaser for the new series back in early May. It focused on a group of vigilantes assembled and wearing masks which paid homage to the Watchmen’s Rorschach as well as a police force wearing yellow masks. However, HBO’s new Watchmen trailer gives much more footage and hints at different characters involved in the show. Within the first 30 seconds of the trailer, there are scenes involving an individual dressed in a red robe with a noose around his neck, a view of blue superhero Dr. Manhattan, and Jeremy Irons’ older version of the Watchmen’s Ozymandias.

The latter two characters appeared in the 2009 Watchmen film which arrived to mixed reception. It presented the comics-based story involving a new group of Watchmen superheroes attempting to find out who murdered one of their own, and learning of a bigger conspiracy at play. The new series appears to be a sequel to the original comics from the mid-1980s and will involve a few of the original characters seen in the film.

Two other characters that were part of the film adaptation also seem to appear in the shots in the new trailer, per Vanity Fair. One is Nite Owl II, who was portrayed by Patrick Wilson in the 2009 film. The other is Silk Spectre, portrayed by Malin Akerman in the movie. It’s unknown who plays Nite Owl II in the new HBO series, but it appears Jean Smart will play Agent Laurie Blake aka Silk Spectre on the show.

There will also be a variety of characters viewers haven’t seen on the screen yet. Among them will be “Red Scare,” “Pirate Jenny,” and “Looking Glass” who are listed on the show’s IMDB credits. All that said, it’s believed this new show won’t be a sequel to the movie but in fact connected to the original Alan Moore comics rather than Zack Snyder’s 2009 film.

HBO’s Watchmen will star Regina King, Don Johnson, Jeremy Irons, Louis Gossett Jr., and others in the cast. The HBO series current lists 10 episodes for Season 1, with a premiere date TBA for October of 2019.
