This week’s episode of The CW superhero series The Flash may have revealed the name of the show’s next big bad. In “Memorabilia,” Barry and Iris were transported into their daughter Nora’s memories. Nora was stuck in her memories after trying to help the comatose daughter of Cicada, the primary antagonist of the season. As they travel through one of Nora’s memories in the Flash Museum of the future, a newscast plays showing Captain Singh of the Central City Police Department talking about crimes attributed to a man calling himself the Red Death. As fans of DC Comics know, the Red Death is the name of an evil version of Batman/Bruce Wayne from an alternate reality.
The Red Death first appeared in the Scott Snyder graphic novel Dark Nights: Metal. The series pits the Batman of our world against an array of evil Batmen from alternate universes led by the Batman Who Laughs, a hybrid of Batman and the Joker. One of the Batmen the Caped Crusader fights is called the Red Death. As revealed in Dark Nights: Metal, the Red Death stole the Flash’s super speed after the murder of his Robin. Scarred both psychologically and physically in the process, the Red Death does not have any qualms about killing Gotham’s criminals.
in a report by Screen Rant, fans of The Flash see the newscast with Singh talking about the Red Death as proof positive that the villain will be the major antagonist of next season. The show previously teased a future villain in such a way in season three. In an episode of the season, the villainous Savitar mentions a man named DeVoe in passing during a conversation with the Flash’s team. DeVoe would later emerge in season four as a major threat to the speedy superhero. It nevertheless remains to be seen if the Red Death will actually be a version of Bruce Wayne in the show or another character altogether. DC has been notoriously protective of the Batman character, with the Caped Crusader being mentioned by characters in the Arrowverse but never actually seen onscreen. However, DC might relent in their standard practice of keeping Batman out of their television shows as the Red Death is an alternate version of the character.
The Flash airs Tuesdays on The CW and was renewed for a sixth season earlier this week.
