Comic book fans have less than a month until the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Like the last MCU film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, the upcoming film explores the Marvel multiverse, with rumors suggesting that characters like the Tobey Maguire version of Spider-Man, Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool, and a new version of the iconic mutant Wolverine will appear in the massive feature. To promote the movie, the film’s cast and crew recently spoke to reporters about the making of the project and how Multiverse of Madness differs from other Marvel films.

In an interview with IGN, Scarlet Witch actress Elizabeth Olsen says that Multiverse of Madness has some scares that will come as a big surprise to audiences of the franchise. Elaborating, Olsen credited the film’s director, Sam Raimi, for creating the scary atmosphere. Raimi, as many moviegoers know, is best known for directing the iconic horror series The Evil Dead. Olsen says that Raimi’s use of scares ramps up the tension in the film, particularly by use of several jump scares. Producer Kevin Feige adds that Multiverse of Madness was always intended to be scary as the franchise’s heroes and villains explore the frightening side of the multiverse.

For Raimi’s part, the director says that he was attracted to the project for its stunning visuals. Raimi describes Multiverse of Madness’s visuals as gigantic in proportion. The director adds that he sees the film’s visuals, particularly its dimensional visuals, as a tool for storytelling. As such, Raimi feels that the film will look especially good in 3D. In addition to visual storytelling, one of the film’s writers, Michael Waldron, adds that the concept of the multiverse is itself a storytelling mechanism. Speaking with reporters from SFX Magazine, Waldron says that the multiverse allows characters to confront mirror versions of themselves. As such, the film’s protagonists must face the consequences of their decisions in life and ponder what might have happened had they chosen to act differently. In this way, Waldron sees the multiverse as the emotional heart of the film.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 6.
