The saga of wide receiver Antonio Brown might have finally reached its sad conclusion. It was announced that Brown was released by the New England Patriots less than two weeks after the team signed him. This signing came right after he was released by the Oakland Raiders amid a series of incidents during training camp. The Patriots finally decided to pull the plug on their partnership with Brown after it came to light that there were multiple sexual assault accusations made against him that the Patriots were not aware of when they signed him, reports CNN. One of the women accusing him is currently in the process of suing him in civil court.
The Patriots finally reached the point where the negatives of having Antonio Brown on their team far outweighed his talent as a receiver. Brown is widely regarded as the best wide receiver in the National Football League. His contract with the Oakland Raiders would have paid him a guaranteed $30 million. However, he complained about not being able to wear the helmet he wanted to and got into an argument with the general manager in front of the team. He then requested his release from the Raiders. This was all seemingly a plan devised by Brown and his agent to allow him to move to the New England Patriots.
Brown played a single game for the Patriots. Following the game, more news about Brown was revealed. He was apparently sending threatening text messages to a woman who accused him of unwanted sexual advances while she was working in his home. She contacted the main office of the NFL and told them about the text messages she had received from Brown. The Patriots were made aware of the situation and decided to get rid of Brown right away. They released him one day before they would have been required to pay him $6 million.
The total amount of the contract Brown signed with New England was for $15 million. There was also a $9 million portion of that amount that would have been guaranteed had Brown remained on the roster. The Patriots got rid of Brown just before they were on the hook for any money. They dodged a very big financial bullet. Will this be the end of the brilliant career of Antonio Brown? It certainly seems that way. He caused all of this damage to himself. Now he will finally have to pay for his misdeeds.
