On Wednesday, Marvel fans are learning they might lose one of the biggest comedic characters in the MCU. Actor Dave Bautista has made it known he might be joining to the competing team. The man responsible for playing “Drax” in multiple Marvel films is saying if James Gunn is going to DC, he’d like to sign up.
The news arrives via People, which also mentions that former “Guardian of the Galaxy” writer and director James Gunn could be in charge of a major DC sequel. Reportedly, Gunn has joined DC to potentially write and direct “Suicide Squad 2.” The first film was given less-than-kind reviews, while Gunn’s two Marvel films each received decent overall reviews. That could bode well for DC which has had its share of issues pleasing fans of the DC comic books.
Meanwhile, Dave Bautista tweeted his excitement that Gunn got a new job. His first tweet simply asked, “Where do I sign up!” with a retweet of the Deadline report link. In his next tweet a few hours later, he gives his praise to the studio for their “incredibly brave and smart move.” Bautista also calls Gunn, “the right man for the job.”
Bautista launched his superhero movie career in the original “Guardians of the Galaxy” film and then reprised his role in the sequel. He was part of Marvel’s “Avengers: Infinity War” film that achieved massive box office success this past year. Bautista is slated to return for his role of Drax the Destroyer in the untitled “Avengers 4” sequel due out in 2019.
Disney previously settled with Gunn for “Guardians of the Galaxy 3” after releasing him. The company decided to let him go based on older controversial tweets he’d made years ago. Various “alt-right journalists” sent a compilation of the tweet remarks to Disney who opted to split up with the director.
It’s not the first time Bautista has been outspoken over Gunn’s firing. At one point he even suggested that he’d ask to be recast if the studio refused to use Gunn’s script for the third “Guardians” film.
The first “Guardians” film brought in a gross of $773 million globally and the sequel hit $863 million worldwide. This could be a major win for DC and Warner Bros while Disney and Marvel could lose a fan favorite should Bautista walk away.
