Chicago Prepares for the Mitchell Trubisky Era

The Chicago Bears are one of the oldest and most storied franchises in the history of the NFL — but you wouldn’t know it by their on-the-field product. The Chicago Bears fell to 1 – 3 this Thursday night as they were blown out of the water by the home town Green Bay Packers. Not only did Green Bay beat Chicago but the Packers tore ahead in the franchise rivalry with a win. The most telling story from the game is not how badly the Chicago Bears lost, but what that loss may mean for the future — in particular the future of QB Mitchell Trubisky.

The Chicago Bears spent big money this past off-season in order to bring in Tampa Bay QB Mike Glennon on a one year, $16 million deal. Glennon, a bench player for the past couple of years, proved quickly that he isn’t capable of handling the load in Chicago. Of course, Chicago didn’t put much faith in him either as they drafted Mitchell Trubisky with the #2 overall pick in the NFL draft. Since the beginning of the season Chicago fans have been shouting to get Trubisky in the game, especially after his effective pre-season performance. Glennon turned over the ball several more times against Green Bay and now Head Coach John Fox might finally be ready to make a change.

John Fox is a notably stubborn coach who values veterans over rookies to an almost denigrating degree. John Fox spoke after the terrible loss, which included a rain delay, and in his speech he made it clear that there might be big moves coming for the organization. Fox said, “We need to make a lot of changes. We will evaluate everything, and we’ve got a lot of work to do before we line up against Minnesota.” Fox finished out his statement to the press by pointing out how money wouldn’t be a factor in his decision as to who to start at QB.

Through the first four games of the season QB Mike Glennon has surrendered the ball via turnover 8 different times with an additional two fumbles that he managed to recover. Mitchell Trubisky is a much more mobile QB in the pocket and the thought is that he will be able to open up the playbook more than the stiff Mike Glennon. If Chicago is ready to make a move then they’ll get to put it on display against Minnesota next week.
