The 25th anniversary of Goldeneye: 007, a James Bond first-person shooter that was deemed revolutionary and groundbreaking when it was originally released for the Nintendo 64 video game console, has been ported to the Nintendo Switch and Microsoft Xbox One. According to a news report published by Maxim along with the teaser trailer, there is no firm date for the release, but it should take place later this year, perhaps as we get closer to the busy holiday shopping season.

The trailer for Goldeneye looks pretty much the same as the original did back in 1997, when it broke video game sales records, which means that older gamers who played it for the first time in N64 cartridge form will be treated to low-resolution polygons. This does not mean that this anniversary edition will not have modern touches; on the Xbox, for example, the resolution and frame rate have been upgraded, and the game will support dual analog stick controllers.

Since Goldeneye is a Nintendo property, it only makes sense that the Switch console version will unique features such as online multi-player sessions for gamers who have equipped their portable consoles with an expansion pack. Xbox players will only be able to play the original multi-player mode, which requires two controllers.

The James Bond film that the game is based on was released in 1995, and it was well-received by audiences who appreciated seeing British actor Pierce Brosnan play the part of MI-6 agent 007. The likeness of Brosnan and his co-star Izabella Scorupco were digitized into low-polygon characters along with nemesis rogue agent 006, who was played by Sean Bean. Unlike other films of the James Bond franchise created by the late novelist Ian Fleming, Goldeneye was not based on his books.

The original Goldeneye on the Nintendo 64 used four-color polygon models. The Switch and Xbox versions will use high-definition polygon models, but the frame rates will be adjusted for improved performance. Goldeneye’s multiplayer mode requires the two players to take control of their characters in first-person view, and the game mode will be called Splatterhouse. Each side gets three lives, and the team that completes the required number of points wins.
