Completely Wireless and Wire-Free

When it comes to security camera systems there are many options available. But almost all of them have one thing in common. The installation process is no easy task. They come with long rolls of wires that you need to run through the attic. If you have ever run wires through an attic you know the pain to say the least. Drilling holes, mounting the cameras, fishing, nd running cables to your hidden DVR or NVR can be an overwhelming task. That’s why most people choose to hire a professional to do the install. Well, what if I told you there is an HD security camera system that is completely wireless and wire-free. That’s the NetGear Arlo.

Pros And Cons

As I just mentioned the NetGear Arlo system is wire-free and wireless. The cameras are 720p, weatherproof, have night vision up to 25 feet and record on motion. You can also live stream and record directly. They are lightweight only weighing 4.3 oz and have a field of view of 110 degrees. Since the cameras are wire-free they can be mounted anywhere outside or inside of the house up to 300 feet away from the base. You can even mount the cameras on nearby trees facing your house. The installation process is extremely simple. Just connect the base station to your home WiFi router and sync your cameras. Download the free Arlo app and you are done. Everything is recorded on cloud storage so there is no need for a DVR or NVR.

Now lets get to what might be a deal breaker for you. The security system has a retail price of $499 for a 4 camera bundle or $629 for a 5 camera. Each additional camera is priced at $150. The cameras are each powered by four Lithium CR123 batteries which are initially included with the system. The CR123 batteries are priced on Amazon at $20 dollars for 12. According to NetGear the battery life should be 4-6 months but it all depends on the amount of live streaming and recording you do. The camera system is not capable of recording 24/7. If you want to use over 5 cameras, store over 1GB worth of recordings and/or keep them for more than 7 days you need to purchase a plan. You can either pay $9.99 monthly or $99 annually.

Deciding Factors

Taking into consideration the features, facts, and limitations above the NetGear Arlo is not for everyone. It depends on the need you have on purchasing a security camera system. I think that the price, batteries and the limitation of 24/7 recording might be a deal breaker for a lot of people. On the other hand it is extremely flexible as far as positioning and the picture quality is excellent. The installation itself is also a breeze. Do the Pros outweigh the Cons? That’s for you to decide based on your needs.

It sunds great at the beginning but the cons definitely outweigh the pros. It would be a huge deal breaker for me. I rather a wired camera that records 24/7 and doesn’t require batteries. The point of security cameras in my opinion is to record 24/7 because the whole recording only motion could be tricky and messed around with. So yea this security camera system does not catch my attention.

I agree with you all the way.

I can probably see this system working as a back up system. Have one recording 24/7 then this one motion only.

The cameras look amazing but I don’t know how long these batteries will last. 4-6 months seems like a long time.

I wouldnt buy this system since it relies on batteries. I like to live stream my cameras a lot.
