There is finally some hope for baseball fans in Chicago after the White Sox pulled off a miraculous comeback win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night. The team is finally starting to resemble the championship contenders everyone envisioned them to be three months ago. Chicago looked to keep the fun going with a potential three-game series sweep of the Blue Jays on Wednesday afternoon.
Ugly Starting Pitching
Lucas Giolito had the honor of starting the last game against Toronto. The former All-star has battled injuries and inconsistent command the entire year. Unfortunately, he once again did not look have his best stuff in this game. Toronto opened the scoring with an RBI base hit by Alejandro Kirk. They added another run in the third when Kirk went deep for the eighth time this season. Everything officially went off the rails for Giolito when Toronto put five more runs on the board in the fifth inning.
Bats Wake Up Late
While the Chicago starter was struggling, Ross Stripling was absolutely dealing for the Blue Jays. Stripling has always had the pedigree of an elite starting pitcher, and he is finally putting everything together in 2022. Stripling put together six solid innings of one-run baseball to go along with five strikeouts.
The Chicago bats started to come alive after Stripling left the game. Unfortunately, they were already trailing by eight runs at that point. The White Sox scored a run off David Phelps in the seventh and three more off Adam Cimber in the eighth to get within four runs. After being unable to pull off another miraculous comeback in the ninth, the White Sox ultimately fell 9-5 to the Blue Jays.
Future Outlook
Wednesday’s game may not have gone to plan for Chicago, but they still have to like the way they played against a very good team. They had their struggles throughout the series, but they always found a way to fight back. If the White Sox continue to show this hunger the rest of the season, then there is plenty of reason to believe they will be playing in the playoffs.
Chicago starts a four-game series against the struggling Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night. Johnny Cueto will take the ball in the series opener for the White Sox. He will be opposed by Dean Kremer.
