Experiencing the world cup without interference is difficult to achieve. The world’s most celebrated sports event sparks debates and conversations around culture, geopolitics and national pride. Gareth Southgate, the England coach, called it the tournament of external noise. This foofaraw caught up with Gregg Berhalter, the US national team coach and his players on Monday.

Since they arrived in Qatar about a fortnight ago, Coach Berhalter and his team have dealt with LGBTQ+ and worker’s rights issues. The night before their match against Iran in the group stage finale, Berhalter and his team captain had to respond to a controversy spiked by the US Soccer Federation.

As a demonstration of supporting women’s rights in Iran, the USSF omitted a symbol linked to Iran’s clerical leaders. This was in a recent social media post captioned “women in Iran fighting for basic human rights.” The federation, after that, retracted and pulled down the post on Sunday evening.

Berhalter and Tyler Adams, his captain, had to bear the blows on behalf of the USSF in a news conference on Monday. Iranian reporters asked tough questions regarding the matter. He stated that he and his team were unaware of any plan by the USSF to change the Iranian flag. Adams and Berhalter looked upset that the federation had put them in a tight spot. However, he apologized on behalf of the staff and players.

Adams remained calm and confident while answering questions regarding discrimination in the US. The midfielder became captain after his teammates voted him in. He said that the United States makes daily progress towards assimilating people from different cultures.

Despite the curveball thrown at Berhalter and his team, he stated that it was a soccer game against a good team for them. He added that the Iranian team has worked over the past four years. The Iranian team is focused on getting a win without any disruptions.

Walker Zimmerman, the US defender, stated that the Iranian players are human. He added that he knows they are going through a lot and empathizes with them. The Iranian coach spoke before Berhalter and his team. He talked about solidarity with all humanitarian causes worldwide regardless of who it affects. He said that the match is important and that sports can bring harmony.
