Not many boxing fans were surprised WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford scored a knockout victory Saturday night while fighting challenger Amir Khan. However, the way the knockout was scored caused a bit of a surprise.

Crawford knocked Khan down in the first round and was dominant throughout the fight. In the sixth round, Khan took a blow below the belt from Crawford. Following a brief pause in the action, Khan’s trainer, Virgil Hunter, informed referee David Fields that his fighter was unable to continue.

The official stoppage of the fight came 47 seconds into the sixth round.

Crawford now sports a record of 35-0 and is still regarded as one of the best pound for pound boxers in the world.

Crawford displayed an accurate attack to the head over the first three rounds of the fight. In the fourth round, the WBO champion switched to a southpaw stance and begin to attack the body of Khan.

Many boxing fans and experts believed Khan represented the biggest challenge to date for Crawford in the welterweight division. Khan was not able to do much with Crawford once the bell for round one began, however.

The real controversy on the night took place in the moments after the fight. Crawford indicated he would want to fight IBF champion Errol Spence in his next bout if he was able to choose his opponent.

Bob Arum, Crawford’s promotor called out Al Haymond and the Premier Boxing Champion on the matter. Arum explained that both Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford want to fight. Arum says all boxing fans should boycott fights from the Premier Boxing championship until Al Haymon agrees to a fight between the two men who many boxing fans think are the number one and number two fighter in the world.

The tactic from Arum may or may not have an effect on a fight between Crawford and Spence being made. However, it would surely provide fight fans with more entertainment than the fight with Khan on Saturday. It was obvious from the beginning of the fight Khan was not in the same class as Crawford.

Hunter was asked why Khan could not continue after suffering the low blow in the sixth round. Hunter explained that the punch took the ‘legs from’ his fighter. He added there was nothing else Khan could do in the fight.
