Problems with the workplace culture at the Washington Commanders are not new. The U.S. Congress has become involved in the allegations against the Commanders and owner, Daniel Snyder. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell testified before the Congressional Committee on Wednesday.
A Congressional Investigation
The workplace culture at the Commanders has been hitting the headlines since 2020. Washington owner, Daniel Snyder is accused of covering up a misogynistic workplace culture. A report into the behavior of Commanders’ staff is yet to see the light of day despite political pressure.
Toxic Culture
The workplace culture at Washington’s NFL continues to be of concern to the NFL. An investigation by The Washington Post revealed employees had expressed concern about a toxic culture. Chris Cooley’s relationship with two cheerleaders is one example of a misogynistic workplace. The player was not censured for his role in the relationships.
Questions of Leadership
Roger Goodell faced two hours of questioning by the House Committee on Oversight and Reform. The NFL Commissioner explained he did not have the power to remove Snyder as the owner of the Commanders. Democrat Rep. Rashida Tlaib asked if Goodell could punish the leadership of the Commanders. The Commissioner answered in the negative. Goodell does have the power to call for a vote to remove Snyder by team owners. 24 of the 32 owners need to vote to remove Dan Snyder for any action to take place. In the current climate, a vote by team owners does not seem likely.
Transforming the Culture
Roger Goodell praised an investigation by attorney Beth Wilkinson for its effect on the Commanders. The NFL fined the franchise $10 million, followed by Snyder stepping away from day-to-day duties. The Committee continues to push for the release of the report by Beth Wilkinson. Removing the leadership of the Commanders remains an option, with members of the Committee promising to subpoena Snyder.
