It may not seem very realistic to many to consider the possibility of Tom Brady wearing the uniform of an NFL team besides the New England Patriots. However, the first-ballot Hall of Famer has given fans in the New England area a number of reasons to believe the end of the Brady era in Boston is winding down quickly.
The latest cause for concern for Patriot fans is the announcement made by Brady on Tuesday that he will no longer function as the Hyannis Port: Best Buddies Challenge’s regional ambassador. Best Buddies is an organization that works on an international level and is committed to improving the lives of individuals battling developmental and intellectual disabilities. Brady has been a part of the annual event hosted by the organization in Massachusetts for a number of years but informed everyone concerned via email on Tuesday that he will now pass the torch to Celtics player Jayson Tatum, chef Guy Fieri, Congressman Joseph Kennedy, and Patriots teammate Julian Edelman.
Brady said he is proud of the many accomplishments he has shared with Best Buddies throughout the years and pledged his continued support to the organization on a global level.
The eyebrow-raiser here is that Brady will continue to work with Best Buddies but not as the ambassador of the Massachusetts event. And in typical Brady fashion, there will be no elaboration on the matter.
Brady’s contract is in its final year. The Patriots reworked his deal before the season began to provide him with a raise. His contract states, however, the franchise tag cannot be applied to him during the upcoming offseason. Simply put, Tom Brady is set to become a free agent for the first time in his career at the end of the 2019 NFL season.
And if these facts are not enough to cause concern from Patriots fans, Brady and wife, Giselle, listed their Boston mansion for sale in October. Brady told local media to not read anything into the home listing but both fans and media are finding it difficult not to surmise something is amiss.
Brady is on record saying he wants to play for an additional three or four years before retiring. He has also said publicly he would consider playing for another team if the situation leads to this turn of events. As of now, the Patriots faithful is hoping the recent developments with Tom Brady are simply ploys to ensure a new multi-year contract from the Patriots. But despite the outcome, it is more likely that an NFL season may start without Tom Brady as the Patriot signal-caller than it has been for two full decades.
